Creating more effective leaders

Leadership has rightly come under scrutiny. People in positions of power – our leaders – in politics, sport, education, business and the charity sector have been criticized.

Failing to engage staff can be attributed to poor leadership and management skills. If people have been placed in leadership and management positions without the necessary development to enable them to fulfill such a crucial role. Organisations that put them in those positions cannot be excused – they have a duty of care to their leaders and to their people.  

Leaders and managers must be developed and set up for success not failure. Worse still, other more damning criticism has been leveled at leaders who have fiddled expenses, taken over-inflated wage packets, demonstrated willful blindness, bullied or harassed their people with the misguided intention of getting more from them or to take advantage of their vulnerability.  These are indefensible acts by ‘supposed’ leaders.  

We recognize and embrace the responsibility to develop leaders who do the right thing and make the right choices.

The role of a leader is to create the conditions for their people to do their best work. They need to have self-confidence and a belief in their people demonstrated in the way they engage with them, their ideas and their skills and a profound interest in them as people and their potential.  Leaders need to win the trust, confidence and respect of their people and this demands that they know their people and their people know them.
